Urdu-speaking people should have equal rights : says US ambassador
Diplomatic Correspondent- Newage Bangladesh Nov 24, 2009

The US ambassador, James F Moriarty, stressed the need that the Urdu-speaking people who have enrolled as Bangladeshi citizens should get equal rights with the Bengali speaking people.
‘I came here as a follow up to see what has happened following the Supreme Court decision to grant the Urdu speaking people the citizenship in the country. I am encouraged to see that they are eager to be the part of the mainstream life here in Bangladesh,’ Moriarty told reporters after visiting the Geneva Camp at Mohammadpur in Dhaka on Monday.
They want to be in the mainstream to be able to work with fellow Bangladeshi citizens, he said.
‘I think Bangladesh has a constitution which very clearly spells out that all its citizens are entitled to equal rights in terms of political development, economic development and social development,’ he said.
