Board Of Directors

Anwar Khan: Founder and President

Anwar Khan, the founder of OBAT Helpers, works as Lead Auditor of quality management systems with one of the leading automotive manufacturers. He holds his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from NED University of Science and Technology, Karachi and a Masters in Business Administration from Indiana Wesleyan University, Indianapolis. Anwar is a Certified Quality Auditor and a member of the (ASQ) American Society of Quality. He is also associated with numerous social services, educational and voluntary activities.

Charlie Wiles: Secretary

Charlie Wiles is the Executive Director of Center for Interfaith Cooperation (CIC) in Indianapolis. Charlie has also served as the founding director of Peace Learning Center from its inception in 1997 until August of 2003.

After obtaining a degree in Political Science from Indiana University, Charlie began working as a Caucus Assistant for the Indiana General Assembly. In 1990, at the onset of the Gulf War, he volunteered to join the U.S. Army Reserves as a combat medic. Corporal Wiles served as a Platoon Leader during his service in the military. 

In 1995, Charlie accepted a position as AmeriCorps Director at the Marion County Family Advocacy Center. The goal of the program was to provide services to victims of family violence. 

Mr. Wiles worked with several community leaders to establish collaboration with Indianapolis Public Schools, AmeriCorps and Indianapolis Parks Department to establish the Peace Learning Center (PLC) in Eagle Creek Park where youth could study peaceful conflict resolution skills while developing an appreciation and respect for the natural environment. Charlie lives on the north side of Indianapolis with his wife, Sachiko and three daughters, Lena, Aya and Mia Utsumi Wiles. 

Sue Deaton: Treasurer

Sue Deaton currently works as the controller/treasurer for Nachi America. Sue has an extensive financial accounting and tax background spanning 25 years of service to the Central Indiana business community. The company, Krebs & Associates was established in 1987 as a home-based business by Sue. It provides financial and accounting services to small business and start-up companies and also provides its services to OBAT. Sue’s specialties include financial reporting and planning; forecasting; cash and cost management; financial modeling/analysis; internal control development/maintenance; operating agreements, proposals and articles of incorporation; business plan writing, company structure development and other specialized financial services.

Sue holds a Masters of Professional Accountancy degree from Indiana University, Kelly School of Business. She received an honorary Doctorate of Business Administration in Accounting in May of 2006 and holds the designations of Enrolled Agent and Certified Public Accountant.

Dr. Ayaz Malik: Director

Dr Ayaz Malik has over 37 years of experience in the field of neurosurgery. He graduated from the medical school of University of Dhaka. Dr. Malik is a very active community member and is involved in various educational and charitable projects. He lives in Garland, Texas. 

Dr. Maarij Syed: Director

Maarij Syed did his PhD from Notre Dame in Physics and joined The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s department of Physics and Optical Engineering. He is currently an Associate Professor at Rose-Hulman and divides his time between research and teaching. Having had the benefit of studying in the USA as well as in Pakistan, has allowed him to closely observe various models of teaching and education. Dr. Maarij Syed will be helping OBAT with educational projects in order to make them more effective and value added.

Tipu Ahmed: Director

Tipu Ahmad is a business consultant with more than 14 years of experience in business development, project management and event planning. He has participated in a number of successful business projects globally as well as in the United States.
Mr. Ahmad received his MBA from Central Missouri State University. He was awarded CMP (Certified Meeting Professional) by United States Convention Liaison Council in 2003. He has held senior level management and consulting positions in the area of business planning and analysis. Mr. Ahmad also received a gold medal from the Republican Congressional Committee in Small Business in the year 2003.

Rezwan Khan: Director

Dr. Rezwan U. Khan, a resident of Illinois, received his medical degree from Dow University of Science. Currently, he is an Assistant Chief Psychiatrist at Veteran Hospital in Danville, IL and a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, at the University of Illinois Urbana- Champaign, IL. Mr. Khan has been an avid supporter of OBAT Helpers since the organization came to be in 2004. He has helped bring in new ideas and new donors/sponsors for OBAT's programs. 

Tabassum Ahmad: Director

Tabassum Ahmed holds two bachelor degrees, one in mathematics/statistics and another in children education programs. She was a semester short in completing her Masters in English literature before moving to the US. She has over ten years of teaching experience in multiple disciplines. Tabassum has worked as a school administrator and also as an office manager in Coke, Dubai. She is multilingual and possesses the expertise to teach in diverse cultures. Tabassum has a passion for working with charity based organizations. She is also a certified interior decorator and divides her time in volunteer work and taking care of her family.

Afshan Khan: Director

Afshan brings in a refreshing practical outlook in managing the activities of the organization. Her immaculate planning and execution skills add strength to the organization. Afshan derives immense satisfaction in working for the benefit of destitute women and is actively involved with different social services and women welfare organizations. Married to Anwar Khan, the founder director of OBAT Helpers, the couple has three daughters.

Administration:

 

Saima Hassan: Director of Development and Communications

Saima completed her MBA with a major in marketing from The Institute of Business Administration in Karachi, Pakistan.  After moving to the US, she received her Masters in Professional Accountancy degree from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and later a certificate in Information Technology from the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology. Saima started her career in Logistics Planning with Philips Pakistan.  In the US, she has remained actively involved as a volunteer with various organizations such as ST. Vincent Carmel Hospital; Kids against Hunger; Heartland Hospice and Kiwanis International. Saima is also certified as a Personal Fitness Trainer from the American College of Sports Medicine.

 

Carey W. Craig: Director of Operations 

Mr. Craig is the founder and principal of The Craig Group LLC, a comprehensive management firm.   Prior to the establishment of his company, Mr. Craig was chief operating officer with the Indiana Office of Faith-Based and Community Service (OFBCI).  As the COO, Mr. Craig provided distinguished service under the leadership of three governors – O’Bannon, Kernan, and Daniels.  He began his career in public affairs as a Governor’s Fellow in 1997.  In his spare time, Mr. Craig enjoys reading, writing, hiking, camping, and spending time with his young children.
