After the independence of Bangladesh in 1971, some Urdu speaking people were flown to Rangpur from Lalmonirhat, Bonarpara, Badergonj, Kaunia, Parbatipur and Vendabari areas for their safety. They were given shelter in the Alamnagar area in Rangpur. About fifteen thousand people, mostly families of Railway employees, were sheltered in abandoned jute warehouses and vacant land. The International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) later formulated these temporary residences into ten camps.
Rangpur School was started in January 2010. It is the second largest of all of OBAT’s schools in terms of student enrollment with more than five hundred and fifty students studying here.
Impact of Rangpur School:
OBAT has sponsored a program of higher education for Rangpur School children. As a result, four hundred and nineteen students have thus far received scholarships for further study at various levels of education. Several of these students are now studying at the Dhaka, Rangpur and a private engineering university in Dhaka. Many of the graduating students have found jobs in professional fields.
Thank you to Mr. Mazher Islam Raja from Texas, for generously sponsoring the school.
