Extreme poverty in the camps means that there are thousands of people who go hungry. Every year, OBAT distributes Ramadan food packages to the underprivileged camp communities and refugees to lessen their struggle in the holy month. The food packages consist of staple items such as rice, flour, soyabean oil, lentils, sugar, milk, semolina and salt.
After the success of the Happiness Bazaar last year, OBAT’s Chittagong team continued with the new approach in Ramadan 2022 as well. Camp families visit a “grocery store” and select food items from a list which have a maximum value attached to it- the items in the list include their prices, and the shopper can select items as long as their total amount does not exceed the set maximum value. This innovative approach gives families in need the freedom to choose less or more of what they need during their month of fasting.
OBAT’s Youth Think Tanks also engaged in a robust effort to distribute Ramadan food, Iftar and Suhoor meals to the poorest camp families. Over 3,000 people received these packages and meals due to the generosity of local donors.
The entire Ramadan food distribution in the Internally displaced Urdu speaking camps in 8 cities, was able to feed over 29,000 people.
In the Rohingya camps, 1,183 food packages were distributed amongst refugee families, thanks to the generous sponsorship of RCF (Refugee Crisis Foundation), HCI (Human Concern International) and FHII(Friends of Humanity International).
Thank you for rising up once again to support deserving and vulnerable communities by supporting OBAT’s Family Assistance program.
P.S. An effort to distribute Eid clothing to orphan children is also underway at this time. Stay tuned for the results of the distribution in our next newsletter!
