OBAT’s English School in Dhaka organized an awareness program on early child marriage. Marrying daughters off at a young age is a common practice in poor communities in Asia. In the camps, where poverty is at a miserable level, parents often engage in this custom in order to have one less mouth to feed. Doing so puts an end to the education of the girl, and quashes her dreams. It also takes away her chance of becoming a productive member of society who could help lift her future family out of poverty.
The Head Teacher of OBAT’s English School, Ms. Halima Sultana, is conducting this program for the female students of Queens School and College. Students from OBAT’s elementary level Dhaka English School transition to the Queen School for further education. During this program, teachers speak about the perils and risks of child marriage and reinforced the importance of education.
Thank you to all the teachers for undertaking this important initiative.
