OBAT has won a $5,000 grant from Power of One Inc. to build a new tube well in Geneva Camp Dhaka.
There are about thirty thousand people or 5,500 families living in Geneva Camp. The camp is faced with a serious scarcity of clean drinking water. The Water Supply Authority supplies water during late night when everyone is asleep, making collection of water impossible. Adding to the problem is a dearth of electricity and the ensuing load shedding or prolonged power outages. The supply of water depends on the supply of electricity. Hence, load shedding presents a great problem, preventing people from collecting water when it is needed, for drinking or household chores.
The water supplied by the authorities is contaminated and not potable. Drinking dirty water leads to several water borne disease, for e.g. cholera, dysentery, diarrhea, typhoid and hepatitis etc.
During a recent routine field visit by the OBAT staff, the leaders of the camp brought up and focused on this problem. They put forth a request for digging of a deep tube well. Installation of a new tube well will ensure that a minimum of 2,200- 2,400 people will get access to clean drinking water. It will prevent the now rampant water borne diseases from flourishing.
This project will provide drinking water to at least 1000 families. To ensure ease of water distribution, the people will be divided into segments. Each segment will be allotted a certain time for the collection of water. This will prevent long lines and waiting periods that would occur if everyone tried to collect water simultaneously.
