Razzak Experiences the Simple Joy of Sunshine

Of all the things we take for granted, something as simple as the sun shining may be the one we forget the most. For 24 year old Razzak, feeling the sun on his skin was a privilege he was finally about to experience after a lifetime confined to his home.

Abdul Razzak is a 24 year old young man residing in the camps with his family. He is the eldest of three siblings. Razzak’s father sells vegetables on roadsides while his younger brother works as a day laborer and does plumbing work. The family carves out a meek existence in D Zone Camp in Ishurdi. While Razzak’s younger siblings were able to finish school, they were not able to further their studies, as their father lacked the means to continue their education. Razzak, on the other hand, never had the chance to attend school because he’s disabled and cannot walk.

With his parents being elderly, Razzak had always been confined to his home because his mother and father were unable to carry him around. So the simple pleasure of the sun on his face was a sensation he had never known. Recently, OBAT distributed wheelchairs to several disabled camp residents and Razzak was one of the grateful recipients.

The occasion became a cause for tremendous celebration for the neighboring camp residents, who all gathered around him to share the joy of the family and to finally see Razzak outside his home – basking in sunshine. Eager to show him the world he’d been missing for so many years, the family’s neighbors excitedly pushed Razaak, in his wheelchair, all around the neighborhood to see nearby shops, stores, and attractions.

It was a truly tearful and inspiring event. And Razzak’s face was resplendent with happiness – just like the sun shining down on him.
